1/ Cementerio de la Recoleta, Buenos Aires
I like the unpretentious tranquility of graveyards. Even those long fallen to neglect convey a sense of liberation in their dilapidation. No one cares anymore. Nobody remembers whose bones are fossilising underneath. No more fuss. Great. They can finally, ultimately, rest in peace. Perhaps the beauty of cemeteries is best left unspoken.
I recently visited the well-groomed cemetery of Punta Arenas, Chile, and the famed Cementerio de la Recoleta in Buenos Aires where Eva Perón checked in at the age of 33 in 1952, long before Don’t Cry for me Argentina. Paying HK$100 entrance for a graveyard felt unreal, as was strolling through the beautiful garden of statues and bones.
This señor Diego Barroti probably had many friends in 1886

2/ Punta Arenas Cemetery, Chile
Even the crosses in gusty Punta Arenas lie down to dodge the daily gales?
